Making the flap.

With wrong sides together, sew the lining to the flap, pulling the lining slightly tight as you sew. This will help to keep the lining from showing around the edges when the flap is turned through to the right side.

Leave the top edge open for turning. When finished, turn the flap right sides out.

Baste round the edge of the flap, rolling the lining inwards slightly. Press the flap flat, using the point presser to absorb the steam; this will set sharp edges on the flap.

3. Marking the pocket

Mark the depth of the finished flap in tailor’s chalk on both sides of the flap. If the pocket position on the jacket front has become a little blurred whilst you have been cutting the flap, re-mark both lines.

Re-mark the position of the front of the pocket if necessary. If you are using a patterned fabric, make sure the flap is still matching at the front.

4. Marking the edge of the pocket

Place the flap on the top line, making sure the front of the flap is on the line marking the front of the pocket.
